September 30, 2017: 10 a.m. to 11 p.m
October 1, 2017: 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Traditionally held on the last Saturday of September, Heidelberg’s most popular and largest street festival has a very special character thanks to the enthusiastic support and initiatives of numerous local associations and private persons, as well as the city’s many artists, musicians, shop and restaurant owners.
A great atmosphere and lots of sure-fire fun are what draw countless thousands of visitors each year to Heidelberg Fall. A popular magnet are the narrow lanes leading down to the Neckar, where lively flea-market stands and, from lunchtime well into the evening, lots of different types of music offer entertainment for young and old. The ceremonial opening on Marktplatz (Market Square) is attended by invited local VIPs and traditional figures like the court jester, Perkeo, and the regional ‘wine queen.’
This is also the venue of the festival’s main stage. Other stages can be found on just about every other square in the Old City, and the program of live music of the most diverse types kicks off at 11 a.m. on most of these. By early evening, at the very latest, the Old City has been transformed into a great big open-air concert offering something for every taste. On the University Square there will be a medieval market with varied performances for adults and children on Saturday and Sunday.
On the numerous stages at almost all public squares a varied entertainment program is on offer. Along the pedestrian zone there are culture points with cultural program. Children (under 13 years) can offer to the children’s flea market in the schoolyard of the Theodor-Heuss-Schule in the “Sandgasse” from 6:30 a.m. their treasures for sale. Participation is free. For the whole family, there will be this year on Saturday and Sunday again a medieval market on the back of the University Square.
